Lisa Lemire
Lisa Lemire's artworks describe her inner visionary transfiguration of nature's chaotic forms and textures, combined with the artifacts of the human primitive. Working with a diverse artistic palette of media, she creates a rich and unique style of three-dimensional art. Beginning with a foundation molded and sculped from different exotic papers, she creates natural hieroglyphic textures and patterns. Then she pours over some areas of molten metal, arranging the images into an artistic voice that seems to speak out of a distant, archaic past, using an ancient, long forgotten and undeciphered language.
Lemire often inlays her works with natural, sometimes polished, stones and other artifacts such as beads, arrow-heads, feathers, strips of leather, sticks, pieces of fabric, and gold leaf. She uses glass for a smooth, reflective balance, both inside the works in blobs of molten glass applied directly to the surface, and with the glass of the frame itself, which becomes a part of the three-dimensional composition. The effect of seeing these compositions in person and at close range is quite surprising: they radiate an intense, chimerical spirit, shifting in forms and colors, depending on your viewing position and on lighting.
These works are both modern and primitivistic in both depth and substance. Lemire strives to create artworks that are peaceful and meditative and which stir feelings of serenity, beauty, and mystery in the viewer. She also can bring to the surface a kind of prehistorical imagination with large bodied and multiform artifacts that remind one of the objects from an archaeological dig. Lemire may be kindling in her viewers a deep reflection on nature and the self, but the sheer boldness in the designs is stunning to the senses.
Lisa Lemire has been exhibiting professionally in the greater Seattle area for about eight years. She was born in Seattle, where her formal education has led her into fashion design, graphical arts, computer-aided design, stained glass, and jewelery design. Her mixed media works have appeared in Seattle, Mercer Island, Bellevue, Kirkland, and Edmonds galleries, shops, and street fairs. Before returning to the Puget Sound area permanently, she also lived and worked in Tacoma, Los Angeles, and Venice, California.
